A truly exquisite example of Tomerlin's work, this impressively sized oil scene shows a traditional Croatian market scene, with women and men selling rustic pottery and other wares. One man inspects the base of a woman's pot by rapping it with his knuckles.
The artist's strong style is a the height of its maturity in this painting, with elements of French Barbizon school clearly influencing the painter, obvious in the naturalistic lighting and honest subject matter. The seriousness of this touch of Naturalism is offset by an element of deliberate and controlled naivety in the brush work and simplistic execution of light and shade. This particular painting may be one of the most accomplished and refined of the artist's portfolio currently available to the public.
The artist has signed and dated at the lower right and the painting has been presented in a handsome 20th Century frame with swept rail and corners with acanthus leaf and floral detailing. The stretchers have been inscribed indistinctly in Croatian to the reverse.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some craquelure to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals two small areas of restoration. The frame has some areas of restoration to the rail at all sides.

Slavko Tomerlin was born on March 2, 1892 in Kešinci near Đakovo. He was educated at the College of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb in 1908-1912, and at the Academy in Prague. His professors were Vlaho Bukovac and F. Zenišek. In 1919 he opened a private painting school in Osijek, which operated until 1921, after which he lived in Zagreb. He is one of the painters whose life and work are little known. The reason for this is that he belonged to a group of artists who did not conform to new tendencies in art with their works, because they did not want to reject the traditional way of civic painting.
Slavko Tomerlin died on January 26, 1981 in Zagreb.
