Collection Information
Edmond John Warre Slade was born on March 20 1859 in Alderbury, Shropshire. He went to Eton where his uncle Dr Warre was Assistant Master. He entered the Royal Navy on 15 July 1872. By 1894 he was promoted to Commander. He rose to the position of Rear-Admiral and became Director of Naval Intelligence. He was knighted in 1911. Although no reference is made to Slade’s artistic abilities in biographical accounts or his obituary, he was evidently a talented watercolourist. His fine and sensitive paintings show a desire to document the exotic landscapes he encountered during his wide-ranging career with the Royal Navy in the late 19th century. From a collection we acquired of works by Slade.
