"Architect and illustrator who was born and lived in London. Casson studied at Eastbourne College in East Sussex, then St. John's College, Cambridge 1929-31, after which he spent time at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Prior to the outbreak of World War II in 1939, he divided his time between teaching at the Cambridge School of Architecture and working in the London office of his Cambridge tutor Christopher (Kit) Nicholson. During the war, he worked in the Camouflage Unit of the Air Ministry. Hugh Casson was appointed to the role as Director of the Festival of Britain in 1948 at the age of 38 and set out to commemorate peace through what was to become a plethora of visual modernity in 1951 on London’s south Bank. His Festival achievements led to his being knighted in 1952. His architectural achievements included various corporate headquarters buildings, university campuses, the Elephant House at London Zoo, a building for the Royal College of Art (where Casson was Professor of Interior Design from 1955 to 1975), and the planning and design of the Sidgwick Avenue arts faculty buildings for the University of Cambridge which took more than 30 years to complete. He also served as Provost of the Royal College of Art and arguably was the most influential and ground-breaking President of the Royal Academy of Arts. His close friendship with the British royals, saw him design the interior of the royal yacht Britannia and he was also credited with teaching Prince Charles to paint in watercolours. Casson illustrated numerous books, including The Old Man of Lochnagar, with text by the Prince of Wales. In 1984 Hugh Casson was awarded the Albert Medal given by the Royal Society of Arts. A prolific exhibitor he showed regularly at the RA, RWS, NEAC and RWA and also found time to lecture at the Architectural Association School in London."
