Artist Biography
Painter and etcher born in Harborne, then near Birmingham. Rushbury studied stained glass design and mural decoration at Birmingham School of Art, 1903-09, under Robert Catterson Smith. Soon after, he worked for two years as assistant to Henry Payne on decorations for the chapel at Madresfield Court, Worcestershire and also worked on stained glass design with the Bromsgrove Guild. By 1912, he had settled in London where he shared lodgings with fellow Birmingham student Gerald Brockhurst and began to specialise in architectural subjects. In 1921, he held his first solo exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery, London. In 1917, he became a member of the NEAC and in 1921, he was elected an Associate of the RE, a full-member in 1924, RWS, 1926 Associate of the RA in 1927 and a full member of the Academy in 1936. During this same year, he held a solo exhibition at Connell & Sons, Glasgow.
Henry Rushbury was an Official War Artist during World War I and took up etching and drypoint under the influence of Francis Dodd before studying briefly under Henry Tonks at the Slade in 1921. During the period 1925-1928, he was also a member of the Art Workers' Guild.
In 1944 Rushbury was elected vice-president of the RWS and after acting for a second time as an Official War Artist, he was given the post of Keeper of the Royal Academy and Head of the Royal Academy Schools. In 1955, he was in created CVO, 1960, CBE, and in 1964 was knighted. A convivial charming man, Rushbury was a staunch supporter of both The Arts Club, Dover Street and the Chelsea Arts Club. He also designed posters for London North Eastern Railways and was also elected an Honorary Associate of the RIBA. Examples of his work are in the BM, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service, Essex County Council, GAC, IWM, Lillie Art Gallery, National Motor Museum NRM, Tate Gallery and the V&A.
