Sidney Yates Johnson (fl. 1890-1926) - Signed Oil Wood Gathering by a River

Description

A stunning late 19th/early 20th century oil painting by the highly collected English School landscape painter by Sidney Yates Johnson. This is an excellent example of the artist's oeuvre, the subject of which often features figures in woodland landscapes. In this particular composition, a figure is collecting logs from a river bank, surrounded by towering trees. The forest has started to transform into autumnal hues of oranges and browns. The painting is beautifully presented in a gilt frame with shell and flower corner details and a gilt slip. The artist's recognisable signature is seen in the lower left corner. Provenance: J. Brown & Son Fine Art Dealers, Duke Street, Aldgate. On canvas.

Condition

Overall the appearance is very good. There is old fine craquelure to the central sky area, but the paint layer is stable and sound. The painting has probably been cleaned at some stage, and a new varnish applied. There are occasional tiny surface spots present, which could be removed with cleaning. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame has areas of loss and restoration as shown.

Artist Biography

Sidney Yates Johnson was a prolific painter of landscapes in oil who was working from about 1890 until about 1926. His work has a distinctive style and is similar to that of Frank Hider. The subjects are often in pairs and usually Cornish coastal scenes, beach scenes, highland landscapes and cottages in a rural setting. The artist did not often inscribe the work with the location, but it was usually dated, with the signature S. Y. Johnson scratched in the wet paint. He sometimes signed with a monogram.
