Sidney Yates Johnson (fl.1890-1926) - Signed 1898 Oil Highland Loch Scene

Description

A signed oil on canvas by the well listed artist Sidney Yates Johnson depicting a figure fishing from a boat in a Highland loch scene. The signature and date have been scratched into the paint in the lower left corner. The painting is beautifully presented in a very ornate heavy gilt frame. Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

There is scattered craquelure typical for a picture of this age, but it is more visible to the upper half of the picture. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of restoration to the left side and to the middle of the picture. There are scattered surface marks to the inner gilt slip, as shown in photos. There are some cracks and losses to the moulding on the frame, but this has mostly been painted over in gold.

Artist Biography

Sidney Yates Johnson was best know as a landscape painter, his paintings are often in pairs and usually depict Cornish coastal scenes, beach scenes, highland landscapes and cottages in a rural setting. He did not often inscribe the work with the location, but it was usually dated, with the signature S. Y. Johnson scratched in the wet paint
