Artist Biography

Sidney Tushingham (1884-1968) was a painter and etcher born in Burslem, Staffordshire, who studied at Burslem School of Art, and the Royal College of Art where he was awarded his diploma in 1910. He subsequently worked primarily as a portrait painter and etcher and also painted ceramics for Royal Doulton in the 1920's. He established his career as a society painter and etcher, specialising in rustic scenes of villages and small-town life and also became known for his etchings of pre-war Britain, Italy and Spain. Tushingham was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1915 and a member of the Society of Graphic Artists in 1920. The majority of his published etchings are detailed in two catalogues published by James Connell & Sons Ltd, London and Glasgow. His etchings were published in very small editions. He lived in Wolstanton, Staffordshire and in London, and died in Haywards Heath, Sussex.
