A truly charming watercolour view of bucolic life in the countryside. A thatcher is hard at work applying a fresh golden thatch to a quaint lime wash cottage. The man is working on a beautiful sunny day, surrounded by lush greenery and dappled sunlight.
The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting has been presented in a truly exquisite early 20th Century Barbizon gilt frame with extraordinary, high relief molding featuring floral and foliate motifs with scrolling acanthus leaves. The frame is finished with an internal gilt slip. The frame's original gilt finish has a beautiful glow and is in extraordinary condition. There is a framer's label at the reverse.
On wove.The watercolour is in near perfect condition with almost no discolouration. The frame, too is in very fine condition with almost no tarnishing to the gilt. There are a few minor areas of restoration to the molding.

Samuel Towers, RCamA (Royal Cambrian Arts Academy), was born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1862. A tailor by profession, the trained at Bolton College of Art and later abandoned tailoring to become a full time artist.
the was one of the original members of the Bolton Art Club and exhibited at its first exhibition in 1882. the exhibited again two years later and also at The Royal Academy, showing a picture of Bolton seen from Queen's Park. Subsequently, the had pictures in many art galleries including The Walker, Liverpool and Manchester City. the also became a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, whose headquarters are at Plas Mawr in Conway, North Wales. In 1906 the had a special exhibition at the Mere Hall Art Gallery, Bolton, of 18 pictures illustrating Tennyson's poem, 'The Brook'. His subjects were taken from districts around Bolton, or areas such as North Wales, the Lake District and the Vale of Evesham, where the moved in 1907, leaving Conway to live in a 14th century black and white cottage in Harvington.
the was commissioned by Deane Church, Bolton, to paint almost life size portraits of noted English churchmen such as The Venerable Bede, St Aidan, Stephen Langton, Wycliff, Cranmer, Ridley, Latimer and George Marsh, the Deane Martyr.
