Artist Biography
Samuel Phillips Jackson RWS (1830-1904) was a landscape and marine painter. Born in Bristol, he was the son and pupil of Samuel Jackson AOWS (1794-1869), a landscape watercolour painter. In 1851, Samuel Phillips Jackson's 'Dismantled Ship off the Welsh Coast' was shown at the BI, where he exhibited from 1851-7. He also exhibited at the RA from 1852-81. His earlier works, mainly in oils, chiefly depicted Devon and Cornish coastal scenes and won the praise of John Ruskin. In 1856 Ruskin wrote on 'Two very interesting Studies of Sea - the breaking of the low waves in 167 is as true as can be; and both pictures are delicate and earnest in perception of phenomenon of sea and sky. The land is bad, in both'. Jackson was elected Associate of the RWS (OWS) in 1853, and after this confined himself mainly to watercolour, contributing annually to their exhibitions. He was elected a full Member in 1876. In 1856 he moved to Streatley-on-Thames and subsequently to Henley and after this he chiefly painted views of the Thames intermixed with inland scenes in Wales. He was interested in the effect of sunlight and was skilful at handling grey mist and clouds.
