Samuel John Lamorna Birch was a painter, born in Egremont, Cheshire. He was self-taught except for a period of study at the Atelier Colarossi, Paris, 1895 he was one of the early members of the loose-knit association of artists in Cornwall known as the Newlyn School. He settled at Lamorna in Cornwall in 1897 and took the name Lamorna to distinguish him from another painter in the same area called Birch. He exhibited at the RA from 1892 and was elected an Associate of the RA in 1926 and RA in 1934. In 1906 he held his first one-person show at the Fine Art Society in London. He was a prolific exhibitor and showed also at the Greatorex Galleries, Ipswich Fine Art Club, NSA, RWA, RI and at the Goupil Gallery. He visited New Zealand in 1937 where he is represented in many public collections. He also designed posters for LMS railway examples of which are held by the NRM. His work is also represented in Beverley Art Gallery, Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Falmouth Art Gallery, who gave him a retrospective exhibition 1997, Lancaster City Museums, Sheffield Art Gallery, Penlee House Museum and also in the Tate Gallery, London.
