Description

Samuel Gillespie Prout - Original Early 20th Century Graphite Drawing. Unsigned. On wove. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a small area of water damage in the upper right.

The youngest of artist Samuel Prout's (1783 - 1852) four children, Samuel Gillespie Prout (1822-1911) was given his mother's maiden name to precede his father's. He intended to follow the family profession of artist and his style was heavily influenced by his father's work. He made a tour of France in 1846 and made some largely unsuccessful attempts to earn a living as a teacher of drawing. His later life was mostly occupied in charitable work. In 1871 he was one of the first to bring relief to starving Parisians after the siege in Paris.
