Samuel Dean (fl.1895-1938) - Late 19th Century Oil Autumnal River Landscape

Description

A large and well presented late 19th or early 20th century oil by the British artist Samuel Dean. Here the artist has depicted a wonderfully detailed landscape, completed in autumnal shades with areas of impasto. Samuel Dean was known to have exhibited during the late Victorian period, and this highly decorative landscape is typical of the period. Dean has used layers of oil applied with a palette knife to create a sense of movement and depth within the composition. Dean was known to paint landscapes in North Wales near Conway. His pastoral scenes are similarly detailed, with expressive touches and a lifelike richness. The painting is presented in a fine, ornate frame with gilt detail. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good for a painting of this age. There has been some restoration work, the canvas has been relined and inspection under UV light reveals very minor dabs of paint, mainly to the outer edges. An area of very paint loss is visible to the lower left area, only a few flakes of paint and noticeable on close inspection (beneath the furthest tree at the left). Also with minor marks and losses to the frame, at the corners and edges. Losses to the moulding visible at at four corners.

Artist Biography

Samuel Dean (fl. 1895-1938) was a painter of landscapes mainly, in watercolours. He lived in North Wales and in Birkenhead and showed at the RCamA, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and was a member of the Liver Sketching Club.
