S.H. Cardwell - 1888 Charcoal Drawing Still Life with Feathers and Pearls

Description

An extremely fine and impressive charcoal still life, depicting feathers in a vase, a string of pearls and an ornate perfume bottle, by the artist S.H. Cardwell. The artist has a clear and outstanding proficiency in the medium, capturing minute details in the composition, including a masterly treatment of shadow and reflection. The work is visually well-balanced, by the broken feather, and the subtle mirroring of the pearls in the vase. Signed and dated April 1888 to the lower right corner. On card. Signed and dated.

Condition

The condition is very good for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. There is a crease to the lower left corner, and another to the upper left area.
