Description

A touching watercolour study of the AVRO Lancaster L flown in WW2 by the artist, Ronald Holmes. The watercolour has a real connection to the history of its subject, with a short piece of text detailing the history of the plane, and the duties of Holmes affixed to the reverse.

The artwork is signed in the bottom right-hand corner and is well presented in a thin wood frame with a gilded inner window and a double cream mount.

Artist Biography

Holmes studied art at Willesden College of Art before WW2. He served in the RAF as a Pilot on Lancasters in Europe, and Dakotas in India, Australia, and the Far East.

He taught at the Central School and then after spending some three decades as an Industrial Designer and Manufacturer. He taught painting at the Salisbury College of Art and with the Dorset and Wiltshire Adult Education Classes.


He has had many exhibitions in Shaftesbury, the West Country, and Suffolk. He has also exhibited in London at the RI Mall Galleries and with the Guild of Aviation Artists.
