The painting evokes feelings of a simpler time, a dream sought by the artist as he moved from England to Canada at eighteen after watching early moving pictures of the freedom of the western frontier and the world of the cowboy.
The painting is signed in the bottom right-hand corner and is inscribed with a metal plaque. Well presented in a molded wood frame with gilded highlights and a linen slip.
On canvas on stretchers.There is a small amount of surface dirt, but the painting is otherwise in fine condition. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Born in England, Gissing is renowned for his breathtaking renditions of the Canadian landscape. Gissing was predominantly self-taught, with the exception of a few years of art instruction at George Watson’s College in Edinburgh during the early 1900s. His love of American cowboy movies lead him to fall in love with the landscapes of the west, and Canada became the country of his dreams.
He worked as a ranch hand in Alberta, Montana, Nebraska, and Arizona, sketching the ranch scenes as he went. He moved to Calgary to try his luck at the Calgary Stampede, finally settled at the junction of the Ghost and Bow Rivers near Cochrane.
In 1929 he had his first solo show at Jack Booth’s gallery in Calgary, which was highly successful.
In the March of 1944 Gissing’s home and studio, full of his paintings and books, burned to the ground. Deeply discouraged but not beaten, Gissing went to work and rebuilt a new home and studio. His paintings continued to sell and it was not long before he was on his feet.
He became an associate member of the Alberta Society of Artists when it was first formed in 1930, and a full member in 1947. His paintings are in the collections of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Edmonton Museum of Art, the University of Alberta, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.
Publishers and lithographers continually seek Gissing’s work for reproduction on calendars, Christmas cards, and book illustrations.
