A charming 18th-century genre scene depicting a lady with her courtiers, as a young gentleman companion attentively dotes upon her. Small deer rest at her side, symbolising harmony with nature in the Rococo tradition. She gazes down at him with graceful nonchalance, the arrangement making clear that she is the one in control. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in a rustic black frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Some discolouration to the surface. The artwork has been previously restored, including relining and small areas of overpainting visible under UV light.
