A charming rural scene depicting a figure in the foreground of a British rural landscape, with cottage and dead tree beyond. This scene is highly typical of the artist, who often painted rural scenes. Presented in a decorative gilt frame with beaded detailing. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some mild craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals no sign of restoration.

Artist Biography

Robin Craig Guthrie, (1902 – 1971) was a British painter of portraits, landscapes and murals and was also a draughtsman and book illustrator. He attended the Slade School of Art between 1918 and 1922 where he won a number of prizes including the 1920 composition prize. From 1923 exhibited with the New English Art Club; later his work was shown in the Goupil Gallery and at the Fine Art Society. His draughtsmanship was admired from early in his career and in addition to painting and drawing landscapes and portraits he undertook book illustrations, including his father's A Wild Garden (1924).
