Painter and arguably the father figure of the extended Fraser family of artists. Born at Findrack, Aberdeen, he was the son of Dr Robert Winchester Fraser (1819-1892), an army surgeon. One of nine children his artist brothers included Francis Arthur Anderson Fraser, Garden William Fraser, George Gordon Fraser (1859-1895), Arthur Anderson Fraser and Gilbert Baird Fraser. Like his siblings, Robert Winchester painted landscapes and showed at the Dudley Gallery Art Society, Walker Art Gallery, MAFA, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and the Royal Scottish Academy. His subjects were mostly views of the south of England and he had two artist children, Robert James Winchester and Francis George Gordon. It is said that in his later years he Robert became 'more fond of the bottle than was good for him' and he died in Gibraltar in 1906, while on his way to visit a brother in Malaga, Spain.
