A fine and detailed watercolour and pen and ink sketch by British architect and author Robert William Billings. ;The scene depicts Dirleton Castle, located in the village of Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland. A cut-out from the original backing card is attached to the reverse. The inscription reads: 'The sketch (watercolour) of Dirleton Castle, 13th century tower, by W. Billings, circa 1850-1860.' Well-presented in a double card mount and in a simple black frame.
On watercolour paper.In good condition overall, with light foxing and some discolouration, typical for a picture of this age.

Robert William Billings (1812-1874) was a British architect and author born in London. He trained as a topographical draughtsman, wrote and illustrated many books early in his career, before concentrating on his architectural practice. Some of his works included 'Illustrations of the Temple Church, London', (1838); 'Gothic Panelling in Brancepeth Church, Durham' (1841) and 'Kettering Church, Northamptonshire' (1843). Billings also produced important works on Carlisle Cathedral and Durham Cathedral, published in 1840 and 1843, and 'Illustrations of the Architectural Antiquities of the County of Durham' (1846). The work for which he became best known was 'The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland', published in four volumes between 1845 and 1852, which contained 240 illustrations, with explanatory text.
