Description

An interesting, original 1696 line engraving by the artist Robert White (1645-1703), depicting a portrait of Sir Robert Cotton (1571-1631), founder of the Cottonian Library. There is a biography of both Roberts on a label to the reverse. Well-presented in a faux polished wood frame, as shown. Unsigned dated and inscribed. On laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface creasing. The engraving has been cropped within the plate lines, and pasted onto another piece of laid. Overall, the work is in very good condition. The frame has only light scuffing to the corners.
