Description

A crisp etching with plate tone depicting a woman saying farewell to a man about to leave on a ferry. Initialled and dated in plate to the lower-right edge and signed in graphite to the lower-left edge. On wove.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration. There are some slight creases to the upper-left corner. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography

Robert Walker Macbeth RA (1848-1910) was a painter and engraver born in Glasgow in 1848. He was the son of painter Norman Macbeth and brother of Henry Macbeth-Raeburn. Macbeth was educated at Edinburgh, in Friedrichsdorf, Germany, and the RSA Schools. He painted landscapes and rustic scenes as well as being one of the first illustrators on The Graphic. A fine etcher, Macbeth was elected RE when the Society was founded. Many of his landscapes were painted in Lincolnshire and in the West Country, although he spent much of his life in London. He exhibited seventy pictures at the RA among which were several hunting scenes. He was elected RE in 1880, RI, 1882, ROI, 1893, RWS, 1901, and RA, 1903. Examples of his work are in the collection of the Tate Gallery and in Adelaide Art Gallery.
