Robert Tonge (1823-1856) - Fine Signed Original 1851 Oil. Signed and dated lower left. Titled on the fillet. In a decorative gilt frame. THE LIVERPOOL SCHOOL OF PAINTERS (1810-c.1914) Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers. Craquelure visible. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration. Lower middle section of canvas has been restored, as seen from the reverse. Slight slackening to canvas. Some scuffing to frame.

Collection Information

Robert Tonge was the most prolific landscapist of the Liverpool School at the beginning of the Pre-Raphaelite era. In that tradition he worked 'en plein air; in both oils and watercolour. He often incorporated a low horizon to show off his skill at painting skies as seen in this work.
