An impressive watercolour with gum Arabic by the popular watercolourist Robert George Talbot Kelly. This fine depiction of a geyser erupting was probably painted during a visit to Iceland. The lunar aesthetic of Iceland's volcanic landscape drew Kelly in its stark contrast to the rural farmlands of Britain. The loose brushstrokes and earthy colours evoke the drama and excitement Kelly drew from these travelling experiences. Well presented in a washline mount and simple gilt frame. Signed and dated. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are foxing spots most visible to the white areas.

Artist Biography

Robert George Talbot Kelly was an English orientalist landscape and genre painter. He worked mainly in watercolours, painting landscapes and genre scenes. Kelly travelled extensively and a large proportion of his work depicts scenes from Egypt, Burma and Iceland. He was a member of the Royal British Academy and the Royal Institute of painters in watercolour. His works can be seen in museums in Glasgow and Liverpool, where he lived for some time.
