There is some craquelure and marking to the surface of the painting. Particularly to the upper of the piece. The painting has undergone some restoration, although areas of surface damage to the lower right can still be seen.

Robert Cleminson was a sporting painter who specialised in Highland scenes and sporting scenes. He became very well known for his subjects of deer, dead game and sporting dogs. He exhibited ten works at the British Institution which was established as a rival to the Royal Academy, at Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, London, and exhibited further works at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, London.
