Description

Robert Benard - Original 18th Century Engraving. With hand colouring. After the illustration by Louis-Jacques Goussier in Diderot's Encyclopaedia. Laid on card and in a white mount measuring (56.5 x 41.5 cm), as shown. Signed in plate. On laid. Creasing along plate line. Wear to edges but this is hidden by the mount.

Louis-Jacques Goussier is famous for his work on Diderot's encyclopaedia. He was the first drawer to be hired on that project, in 1747 and he did himself more than 900 plates and directed the drawing of the others. Some call Goussier the third encyclopaedist, after Diderot and d'Alembert.
