Artist Biography

Richard Sorrell (b. 24 September 1948, Thundersley, Essex) is a British painter known for invented figurative compositions, as well as landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and aerial views of country houses. He is the son of the historical painter and draughtsman Alan Sorrell (1904–1974) and the watercolourist Elizabeth Sorrell, both Members of the Royal Watercolour Society. Sorrell trained at Walthamstow Art School (1965–66), Kingston College of Art (1966–69), and the Royal Academy Schools (1969–72). He has worked as a full-time professional artist since completing his studies and now lives and paints in west Cornwall. He was elected to the Royal Watercolour Society in 1975, serving as its Vice President from 2002 to 2005 and as President from 2006 to 2009. He is also a member of the New English Art Club (on whose Executive Committee he served from 1995 to 2006 and again in 2009–10), the Royal Society of British Artists (which awarded him the De Laszlo Medal in 2002), the Art Workers' Guild, the Small Paintings Group, and the Chelsea Arts Club. He served as a Governor of the Mall Galleries from 2000 to 2006 and on the executive committee of the National Artists Association. His work has been exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition every year since 1971, alongside regular showings with the RWS, RBA, NEAC, and numerous British and American commercial galleries. His paintings are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of London, and the National Trust, the latter including aerial views of Blickling, Ickworth, and Uppark, and paintings of Calke Abbey and Flatford. The V&A holds his aerial view of the Channel Tunnel workings at Shakespeare Cliff together with supporting drawings. In 2001 he presented a painting of her Centenary parade to HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.
