Description

A bold, monochrome silk screen by the artist Richard Pinkney. Pinkey was a word artist who used graphic design to elevate his writing. The print was executed by David Pyke in 1967. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some creasing to all four corners and a 1cm tear to the upper right edge.

Artist Biography

Richard Pinkney, was born at Ipswich on 22 July 1938, son of Harry Pinkney and his wife Annie née Howe, who married at Hawnby, Yorkshire on 13 July 1921. Richard was educated at Ipswich School and studied painting and printmaking at Ipswich School of Art 1955-1959 and at the West of England College, Bristol. Richard taught at colleges of art at Ipswich, Colchester, Walthamstow, Winchester and in London at St Martin's and at Kingsway College. He founded a tool hire company and worked as a building contracts manager, designing timber framed buildings in the UK and America and during the mid 1980s directed the Lady Lodge Art Centre, Peterborough. A painter, sculptor and printmaker in oils, acrylic, gouache, intaglio &c., his graphic art, mail art and sculpture were included in several shows at Colchester, Ipswich, Peterborough, Leicester and abroad and has had solo shows in London, Edinburgh and in 1995, Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich held a retrospective exhibition. Richard’s graphic output includes postcards, pamphlets and suites of prints for his own Trivia Press which he founded in 1965. Richard was selected for a Sainsbury’s 'Critics’ Choice' award and has exhibited his paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture widely, being held in private and public collections including the Tate, the V&A and many universities. A member of the Suffolk Group and of the Ipswich Art Society where he exhibited in 1997 from Oak Cottage, 10 The Street, Bramford, Ipswich, two pictures 'Scapegoat' and 'Captain Nemo' and in 2006, a mixed media 'Pipeline' and also exhibited at ArtLib at Woodbridge Library in 2015. He married at North Radstock, Somerset in 1962, artist Judith Foster [q.v.] and they had two sons.
