Richard Hext was born in the Newton Abbott district in 1895. From information from the 1904 census and from a western Times article around the same period, it is inferred that Hext was never able to fully use his arms and had learnt to write using his toes.
He was reported to live in a Workhouse by the age of 23 and underwent many operations in London which were results of his disabilities. After the operations Hext is reported to have lost his ability to write with his feet, but was taught to write and paint with his mouth by a nurse. Encouragement to pursue his interest in art from teachers saw him take a place at Newton Abbot School of Art.
Hext won several competitions for disabled artists including 1st prize f at the Kenny International Art Show, Minneapolis - a show specifically for mouth and foot artists. He had also won 2nd prize at the Torquay Disabled Rally at Torre Abbey on June 21st, and 1st prize at an exhibition in Plymouth.
Hext's art saw him exhibit around Europe and receive recognition from members of the monarchy.
