Artist Biography

Richard Demarco (b.1930) is an artist, illustrator, gallery director, and teacher, born in Portobello, Edinburgh. He attended Edinburgh College of Art, 1949-53, where he studied mural painting and graphic design. After National Service, 1954-56 he was appointed art master at Duns Scotus Academy, 1956-57. In 1963 Demarco was a founder-member of Traverse Theatre and in the same decade he launched the Richard Demarco Gallery and became a focal point for innovative art and theatre. In 1975 Demarco gained a Scottish Arts Council Award for services to contemporary art in Scotland. Demarco was closely involved in promoting Eastern European events in Britain and in 1976 he was honoured with the Gold Award of the Polish People's Republic. He became a Director of the Edinburgh Arts Summer School, was closely involved in the Edinburgh Festival and was a visiting lecturer at over 50 educational institutions in Europe and North America. Demarco's publications included The Artist as Explorer, 1978, and The Road to Meikle Seggie, 1979. He published a number of suites of prints, including The Malta Suite for Editions Alecto, 1970. The Victoria & Albert Museum, Scottish Arts Council, Stirling University Art Collection, Warwick University and Philadelphia Museum of Art hold his work. He was awarded a CBE for services to art in the New Year's Honours list of 2006 having previously been awarded an OBE.
