Description
Rev Henry Robinson Wadmore - Original 1863 Graphite Drawing. Signature is at the far lower left of the sheet. Signed and dated and inscribed. There is a mark in the centre as shown. From a large collection we have acquired of original graphite drawings by Rev Henry Robinson Wadmore MA. Henry Robinson Wadmore was born in London, the son of James and Henrietta Wadmore. Henry's family were originally from Southampton, where they had a long record of service in the Navy. He was MA Oxford 1845 (Pembroke), ordained 1846, MA 1848, when made curate of South Stoke, Berks. His first independent cure was St. John Nottingham Hill from 1857 to 1860 when appointed to Mary Abbott's, Kensington. In 1864 he founded and endowed a new church in St. John's Wood, (All Souls, Hampstead) designed by his brother, James Wadmore. It was consecrated in 1865, and Henry remained patron and incumbent until his death around 1904, when the patronage passed to the Bishop of London. Wadmore also produced illustrations for various religious periodicals, some of which are in the New Zealand National Library. Wadmore was evidently a talented amateur draughtsman and prolific sketcher. Our collection of graphite drawings, dating from 1863 to 1891, show his keen and sensitive observation of landscapes around England and France. He excelled at creating depth in his drawings through use of light and dark line and tone. His English scenes include the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire and mountains of the Lake District, as well as often depicting churches, abbeys, cathedrals and ecclesiastical buildings, including Hampstead, Wells, Worcester, Ely and St Albans. Wadmore was seemingly in France around 1875, and many of our landscapes depict coastal locations around the Toulon area, such as Cap Brun, Mourillon and Sablettes. Most are signed and inscribed and many are dated.Size
