A charming pastel portrait study showing a professional wrestler. Raymond John Vandenbergh has beautifully captured the tough yet sensitive character of the sitter in vivid tones and expressive line. Well presented in a card mount and gilt effect frame. With an inscribed exhibition label on the reverse with additional biographical details. Signed. On wove.


There are foxing spots to the mount and a loss to the lower left corner of the frame. With minor scuffing to the edges of the frame, as shown.

Artist Biography

Raymond John Vandenbergh (b.1889) was a painter of animals, portraits and landscapes in oil, pastel and watercolour. Vandenbergh initially attended the Hornsey School of Art and later received instruction under the renowned animal and wildlife painter, Arthur Wardle.

Vandenbergh gained much success as a wildlife painter going on to exhibit his paintings at the Royal Academy and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
