A fine portrait study dated 1737 portraying a young boy from a noble family bearing his first sword. Dressed in fine military-style clothing, he clutches a small sword in one hand and a hat in the other. In the background, men on horses can be seen in combat, foreshadowing his future as a military leader. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame. On canvas.Condition
The painting has undergone some restoration, with small areas of overpainting. Some denting to the canvas in the upper left quadrant. Evidence of bitumen deterioration to the lower half of the painting. Some discolouration to the varnish. Small areas of paint loss to the upper centre and lower left corner. Some wear and small losses to the gilt frame.
