A graphite drawing by English artist Robert Standish-Sweeney depicting the presentation of the Knight of the Garter Banner for Sir Winston Churchill. This ceremony took place of the 5th April 1965, three months after Churchill's death. As customary on the death of a Knight of the Garter, Churchill’s Garter achievements such as his banner crest, helm and sword, were removed from his stall in St George’s Chapel. Sweeney has captured this moment in a fine and intricate drawing depicting the interior of St. George's Chapel. Inscribed with the location and date at the lower right corner. Signed. Areas of discolouration and mount burn with very minor foxing. Overall in good condition.

Artist Biography
Robert Standish Sweeney was born in Northampton in 1917 and studied at Northampton College of Art. A well recognised painter in all media and all subjects specialising in watercolours with emphasis on buildings, Sweeney worked extensively in France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Sweney held successful one-man shows which were televised, and was a regular exhibitor at all major professional Societies including The Royal Academy, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, The Royal Society of British Artists, Paris Salons, and Artists of Chelsea. His work is represented in many private collections including at Windsor Castle.
