Description

A delightful watercolour by R. S. Mayer (fl. 1911–1930) depicting a garden with a low stone wall and flowers in various shades of pink. A label affixed to the reverse asserts that "this garden was much beloved by the famous author" Charles Dickens, "and was mentioned by him in 'Martin Chuzzlewit' as being the rendezvous for Ruth Pinch and John Westlock. The dark house in the left of the picture was the residence of Edwin Drood." It also states that the picture was exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool in 1921. The work is signed and dated to the lower left, and is well presented in a gilt frame. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
