Artist Biography
Caricaturist and painter. Also known as 'Quiz'. Born in London, son of a county court judge and brother of artist Gwen Evans. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art with Walter Sickert and Sylvia Gosse, under Henry Tonks. During WWI, he served with the Welsh Guards. He abandoned a career as an oil painter to concentrate on portrait illustration and caricatures. He was employed by the Saturday Review and later by the London Mercury. He had exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries in the mid '20s and at Colnaghi in 1932. His books include: 'The Beggar's Opera', 1922, and 'Eighty Eight Cartoons', 1926. He retired to Dolgellau, Merioneth. Retrospective exhibitions were held at Langton Gallery, 1975, and Edmond Xavier Knapp in 1985. The National Portrait Gallery holds an extensive collection of his work.
