Pieter Van Schuppen - 1665 Engraving, Gabriel Nicolas De La Reynie

A fine engraved portrait of the founder of the modern police force,Gabriel Nicolas de la Reynie (1625-1709), engraved by Pieter Van Schuppen (1627-1702) after the original portrait by Pierre Mignard (1612-1695). This well executed portrait has an ornate frame with ribbon work, a coat of arms and a plinth. The artist's and engraver's names and the date the print was made are in the bottom left and right quadrants. On wove.

The print is in remarkably good condition given its age, with only light discolouration. There are two tear repairs, one to the top left edge and one to the middle left of the picture. The original plate lines have been cut off.
