Description

A charming etching by the Dutch artist Pieter Arie Nijgh in which several chickens peacefully roam around a rustic farmyard. A graphite inscription to the lower left identifies the farmhouse as being in the Twente region of the Netherlands, where the artist lived and worked for much of his life. Signed to the lower right. Artist Biography

Pieter Arie Nijgh was a Dutch amateur painter, watercolourist, draughtsman, set painter, etcher, lithographer, and maker of woodcuts. He trained at the 'Tekenschool voor Kunstambachten' (Drawing School for Arts and Crafts) in Amsterdam and later at the 'Staatliche Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste' (State Academy of Fine Arts) in Berlin. On his parents' advice, he did not pursue formal art training. He lived and worked successively in Amsterdam, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. In 1901, he came to Enschede in the Twente region, where he created numerous watercolours of the farms, forests, and streams in the area. He became a founding member of the 'Twentsche Kunstkring' (Twente Art Circle).
