Philip Hugh Padwick (1876-1958) was a painter born in Horsham, Sussex, the son of a barrister and a Justice of the Peace, who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London. He subsequently worked primarily as a landscape painter. Padwick began exhibiting in 1908 and over the next four decades showed at the New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Scottish Academy. His paintings mostly have a sombre dark feel and appear stylistically to have been executed 50 years earlier than they were.
