A seascape depicting large clipper ships setting sail for the baltic sea with small red-sailed boats in the foreground. Presented in an ornate gilt-effect wooden frame with a linen slip and gilt-effect inner edge. Signed to the lower-right edge. Inscribed with the title on the verso. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
There are a few mild marks and abrasions to the surface, including a slight indentation in the upper-right quadrant. Overall in very good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.

Peter Whittock was an accomplished nautical artist who exhibited at the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Before painting full-time he worked as a tugboat skipper. His first-hand experience of ships and the sea underscores the detail and affection of his artistic style.
