A charming interior scene depicting a woman playing cards by lamp light. The artist captures the atmospheric interior in rich colours and gestural brushwork, He pays particular attention to the potted plant in the foreground, creating highly textured leaves. Signed with initials and dated to the lower left.Condition
There is some light scuffing to the corners of the board.

Artist Biography
Peter R. J. Cumming was born in West London and trained at Hammersmith College of Art and at the Royal Academy Schools from 1936 to 1940 under Walter Westley Russell.
During World War II he served in the Mediterranean, based in Malta. In 1990, he was commissioned by the War Museum in Valletta to do a painting of an air-sea rescue taking place. He also donated the many sketchbooks he completed during his service there.
In 1960, Cumming moved to Dorset from Oxford, where for ten years he had been a lecturer in painting at the City of Oxford School of Art. From 1960 until 1979, he was a lecturer at Poole College of Art, later to become Bournemouth & Poole College of Art. During his teaching career, he exhibited in London and Oxford, and his work is represented in the collections of Poole Museum Service. He was a long time member of the Bournemouth Arts Club, and he exhibited locally and at the RA and RBA.
