Description

An engraving by Peter Lightfoot (1805-1885) after Sir Peter Paul Rubens's (1577-1640) 'The Descent from the Cross' (1612-1614), the central panel of a triptych. The painting still hangs in its original place, the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium. Inscribed with the title and names of both artists in plate. On wove laid to card.

Condition

The engraving has been cropped within the plate lines. There is some discolouration, mount burn, a water stain to the lower edge, and some small losses to the substrate to the lower-left edge.

Artist Biography

Peter Lightfoot (1805-1885) was a line engraver who worked in London engraving plates for 'The Art Union' and 'The Art Journal'. He exhibited at the RA in 1856.
