A fine and evocative French river landscape, by the artist Peter Leslie (b.1877), depicting children playing on a river bank, with a wooded path and vernacular houses. The artist has produced a deeply layered composition, creating a sense of rural daily life in late 19th Century France. The river is most likely the Cailly, which flows into Rouen, Northern France.
Signed by the artist to the lower right, and inscribed 'Rouen' to the reverse. There are also two 'Sotheby's Property' labels to the reverse of the frame. Well-presented in an original late 19th Century substantial wooden dark gilt frame, with pronounced leaf and berry mouldings, acanthus leaf cove and lamb's tongue running pattern.
Signed. On canvas on stretchers.In good condition overall. There are several repaired tears in the canvas, which have been professionally restored. There is some creasing around the canvas, from the stretchers behind. Craquelure is expected for a picture of this age. The frame has areas of restoration, mainly to the corners and edges, with some in-painting. Scuffing and surface marks around the frame, with some historic moulding losses.
