Description

A wonderful mid-century still life by the American-born artist Pauline Boumphrey. Although better known for her bronze sculptures Boumphrey is known to have produced works in oils and this delightful floral work displays her mastery of both mediums. Well presented in a simple wood frame with gilt detail. Bertram Atkins Framers label to the reverse, alongside 'The Pantechnicon, Belgravia' label. Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface dirt. There are minor marks to the canvas surface and some very minor flakes of paint loss. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Scuffs to the frame and a split in the wood at the upper left corner.

Artist Biography

Pauline Boumphrey was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her primary education was in England at the prestigious Roedean School and after her marriage, she lived in Cheshire until moving in the 1940’s to Killiecrankie in Scotland. From here she specialised in statuettes some of which were equestrian. Her work was shown at the Royal Scottish Academy. She also showed at the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. She is also credited with a 1942 design for a war memorial to the civilian victims of the Blitz. Her death was recorded in New York in 1959.
