Artist Biography

Paul Lucien Maze (1887-1979) was born at Le Havre, Normandy, into a French family. Maze learned the fundamentals of painting from Pissarro and, as a young boy, he sketched on the beach with Dufy. At the age of 12, Maze was sent to school in Southampton, England, to perfect his English, and whilst there, he fell in love with all things English. He became a naturalized British subject in 1920. During World War I, having first attempted to fight with the French Army, Maze served with the British, later writing 'A Frenchman in Khaki'. In 1918, he took a studio in Paris where his neighbors included André Derain and André Dunoyer de Segonzac. Maze became a close friend of Winston Churchill, having made his home in England after the war and painted with the statesman on a regular basis. Paul Maze is often known as “The last of the Post Impressionists" and was one of the great artists of his generation. He painted in oil, watercolor, and pastel. He is noted for his typically English themes of rowing, sporting, and ceremonial events such as racing at Goodwood, Henley Regatta, Trooping the Colour, and yachting at Cowes. Among later exhibitions was a series of shows held at Browse & Darby and Panter & Hall. Examples of his work are in the collections of Glasgow Museums, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Government Art Collection, Leamington Spa Art Gallery, Manchester City Galleries, Mercer Art Gallery, National Museums Northern Ireland, Southampton City Art Gallery, and the Tate Gallery.
