An accomplished genre painting by Paul Henry Schouten (1860-1922) depicting a peasant woman standing near the doorway of a sheltered barn, whilst overseeing a small flock of ewes and lambs gathered in the foreground. The arrangement draws the eye naturally from the dark doorway behind the figure down through the flock toward the viewer. Schouten demonstrates confident, loose brushwork particularly in the rendering of the sheep's woolly coats. The composition is well presented in a lely panel frame with foliate ornamentation at the corners. Signed to the lower right. On panel.
Condition
Inspection under UV light reveals some minor retouching. Light wear to the frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Artist Biography
Schouten was a Brussels-born painter who studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. He was known primarily for pastoral and farmyard scenes featuring livestock, peasant figures, and rural interiors.
