Artist Biography

Paul Derbyshire was a painter and teacher born in Blackburn, Lancashire. Artistically he studied at Blackburn School of Art, 1954-57 where he gained a National Diploma in Design. Following National Service with the RAF, he took up a scholarship at the RCA, 1959-62 where he entered the Graphic Design department to study printmaking. His peers included David Hockney the latter being instructed by the former in the finer points of printmaking.

After his graduation in 1962, Derbyshire took up a post at Liverpool College of Art, now John Moores University, where he taught printmaking and after ten diligent years he was offered and took up a sabbatical year at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Derbyshire gave up full-time lecturing in the late 1980’s and experimented in ceramics and returned to his long abandoned easel. One a visit to Hong Kong in 1994 he found motivation from the bustling streets which were soon to become his trademark. A hesitant exhibitor he did have his work accepted for the Singer & Friedlander/Sunday Times Exhibitions, The Discerning Eye and the RWS open exhibition, where he was awarded prizes in three consecutive years. This also led to a solo exhibition in the offices of financial advisors Baker Tilly in Bloomsbury. In 2004, Derbyshire entered the Patchings Art Centre Exhibition at Calverton, Nottinghamshire where he won the Derwent Award. In the same year Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery held an exhibition of his work and some of his prints appeared in the book Modern and Contemporary Prints by Phoebe Phillips and Tom Robb.
