P. Henson - 1949 Watercolour The Salt Tower, Tower of London

Description

A watercolour and pen and ink painting of the Salt Tower at the Tower of London. The Salt Tower was built in the late 1230s and is part of King Henry III's curtain wall which surrounds the fortress. Unsigned. There is a text inscribed on the reverse about the history of the Tower. Date taken from other paintings from the same portfolio. On wove laid to card.

Condition

There is some mild foxing and discolouration, primarily to the margins. There are some remnants of green paper to the right-hand corners and left edge, likely from a previous mount.

Collection Information

A collection of paintings depicting views and architectural details of the Tower of London, dated 1949. The majority are inscribed with details about the scenes on the reverse which are written with care and fascination, the portfolio perhaps originally being intended as a gift or as a preparatory manuscript for publication. The surname of the artist was inscribed on the portfolio's original folder.
