Norman Garstin was a painter, born Caherconlish, Co. Limerick, Ireland. He studied both engineering and architecture before seeking his fortune in the diamond fields of South Africa. Having failed to make to any serious money he went on to co-found The Cape Times newspaper. Despite a reputation as a brilliant journalist, his financial position did not improve so he returned to Ireland in 1877. He soon after decided on art as a profession and in 1880 studied at Verlat's Academy in Antwerp, and under Carolus-Duran in Paris, 1882-84. He travelled in Italy and to Morocco before settling in Newlyn in 1886 where he became part of the Newlyn School, later moving to Penzance in 1895 where he taught on occasion at Penzance School of Art. More than others in this school, he displayed a preference for scenes from modern life.
Norman Garstin also excelled at painting a cool, silvery tonality, created by rain on the streets or light on wet sand. Garstin was a founder member of the NEAC in 1888 and also a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists from 1895 until his death over thirty years later. A prolific exhibitor Garstin also showed at the RBA, RA, RHA, FAS, RBSA, GI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, MAFA, RCamA, RI, ROI and Walker's Gallery, London. To subsidise his painting he wrote articles for art journals and also taught privately. During the latter part of his career, he turned to sentimental costume painting, presumably due to financial pressures.
Gartin's work is in the collections of Brighton and Hove Museums and Art Galleries, Dublin City Gallery, Glasgow Art Gallery, Hull University Art Collection, Manchester Art Gallery, NGI, Penlee House Museum, Plymouth City Art Gallery, Royal Cornwall Museum, Truro and the Tate Gallery.
