A fine gouache landscape with stark Wintry trees and a lone fox sprinting across an open field. The artist has signed to the lower right and dated and inscribed to the lower left. On wove board.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Small scuff to the upper right quadrant.

Artist Biography

Ninetta Butterworth (b.1922) was born in Jersey. She was educated at Jersey College for Girls and afterwards worked as a groom. During the German Occupation of Jersey she spent six months in jail for open defiance of the occupying forces. After the liberation, Butterworth moved to Devon where she worked in a hunt stables and hunted with the Silverton and East Devon Foxhounds. She also rode in several point-to-point races, winning two ladies' races in the early 1950s. At this time she began to paint equestrian and dog portraits, racing scenes, and hunting scenes. In 1951 Fores Gallery began to exhibit her work and in 1955 some of her work was published in limited editions under the pseudonym 'Vixen'. In the late 1950s she began painting carriage scenes and the Lipizzaners at the Spanish Riding School. In 1973 she held an exhibition at Fores of Bond Street.
