A captivating mid 19th century portrait of a young holly seller by the highly regarded British artist Nevil Oliver Lupton (1828-1915). The young boy's gaze meets the viewer's with striking directness, creating an intimate connection that transcends the canvas. The portrait occupies a nuanced space between social observation and romanticised sentiment. The boy appears well-kept rather than desperately poor – his rosy cheeks, glinting eyes, neat hair, and quality clothing all suggest an idealised portrayal of a Victorian street seller. Lupton renders the portrait in exquisite detail with a masterful approach to the oil medium and brushwork. The painting is beautifully presented in an impressive antique gilt frame (possibly original to the artwork) adorned with an intricate oak leaf and acorn moulding and an internal slip. Signed with initials to the lower left. Dated 1861. On canvas.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse. There is some craquelure to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of historic overpainting and restoration. The gilt effect frame is in remarkable condition with no major losses and minor stable cracking. There is a small scratch mark to the internal slip (lower left). Small knocks and chips to the frame's side edge.

Artist Biography

Neville Oliver Lupton (sometimes spelled Nevil) was a British landscape painter born in 1828, the youngest son of the renowned mezzotint engraver Thomas Goff Lupton (1791-1873) and his wife Susanna Oliver. Lupton achieved early recognition when he won the prestigious Turner gold medal of the Royal Academy at the first competition in 1857. This medal had been established from J.M.W. Turner's estate to honour landscape painting, making Lupton's achievement particularly significant given his father's close working relationship with Turner on the famous Liber Studiorum engravings. He became a frequent exhibitor of landscape paintings at the Royal Academy, continuing to show his work there until 1877. His paintings typically featured rural and pastoral scenes, including harvest landscapes in dappled light, Welsh mill scenes, and countryside views. Notable works include "Carry Hay" (1869), a summer harvest landscape, and "A Welsh Mill Scene" (1879). Lupton worked primarily in oils on both panel and canvas, and his paintings demonstrate the Victorian era's appreciation for naturalistic landscape painting. He lived during a period when British landscape art was flourishing, and his work contributed to this rich tradition. He died in 1915, having spent nearly five decades working as a professional landscape artist.
